A while back I shared why I am a creative relationship marketing expert and why it’s important for your business. But do you know the most famous creative relationship marketer? Some would say it’s Steve Jobs; others may point to Seth Godin.
But come on. The real creative relationship marketing genius is Santa Claus. This man has one of the most successful businesses for generations. And he’s a household name. (It’s the kind of thing we entrepreneurs dream about!)
How has he done it? Although Santa may use some magic to get into houses with or without a chimney, he uses creative relationship marketing, of course. Here are just some of the examples:
- He knows his niche and communicates to them ONLY. Santa’s market is kids and he knows what appeals to them. Primary colors (red suit), cute colleagues (reindeer and elves), and a love for cookies makes him RELATE to them. Use this idea to get to know your niche and what appeals to them.
- Santa keeps a clean list. The jolly ol’ elf knows that there comes a certain time when kids just aren’t interested in him anymore (aka, they stop believing). So he purges his list occasionally (and checks it twice) to make sure he connects with people who really want what he offers.
- Santa knows how to reach out to his market effectively. With tons of songs and stories he becomes part of the culture for young minds. What are you doing that envelops you in your tribe? In addition, he makes an effort to speak one-on-one (and on his lap no less!) with each one of his customers. This may sound old fashioned, but trust me, building personal relationships is key to his longevity.
- He keeps customers coming back. He makes sure he has a high satisfaction rate, once you’re a customer you remain a customer. And when you’ve aged out of his core list, he recruits you to spread the word on his behalf. (Now that’s pretty clever!)
