Last week I began a new series called Top Marketing Questions, where I share my answers to some of the most common marketing and business questions I get to help you and your business become a success.
How do I get traffic to my website?
I understand this is a basic question, but no matter how experienced one is, it is the most common question I get.
And for good reason. After all, without getting traffic to your site you can’t sell anything.
But getting tons of traffic is really not a great goal for your business. You don’t need tons of visitors to your site for you be successful. On the contrary, a small group of visitors who are dedicated to you will lead to your success.
I see how it may seem that having tens of thousands of visitor is key… on the surface. However, it’s the old saying about customers: It costs a lot more to get a new customer than to keep one.
So before you set out to grow your traffic, focus on what you already have and try to get them to become loyal to you.
Then focus on the traffic. So what works to get more visitors?
It depends. (I know that sounds like a cop out, but believe me it’s not.)
You see, I could rattle off dozens of traffic generating tactics, but the question is will they work for you and your niche? Take for example, using social media. Many people say it works, however in some niches it doesn’t produce the results you want. Also, what used to be ‘hot’ for traffic building (Twitter, anyone?) has been replaced with something new and different (Pinterest).
So the key is to look at what IS working to bring in the most amount of traffic by going behind the scenes of your website and looking at the statistics and analytics. Once you determine what’s working, focus on that to drive more traffic to your site. I promise you’ll see a huge difference!
