I just saw my girls off to school. The big yellow bus came at 7:58 AM. I took them out, hugged them, and helped them up the steps. The big yellow bus will return at 3:00 PM. And I will be there to hug Sasha and Lyra when they come back down those steps.
I work when they are gone, apart from time for lunch with my husband. But when the girls are home, I am all theirs.
Let’s face it, the school and work system in this country was not designed to make life easy for devoted mothers (or for devoted fathers either.) You just can’t work full-time and be there to see your kids get on and off the school bus. That’s the main reason I work from home: to be there whenever that big yellow bus comes into view.
I really feel that I get the best of both worlds. I can harness my passions and talents to run a business and help other entrepreneurs achieve their goals. Yet I also get to be with my daughters whenever they are home.
So when people ask why I run my own business from home, I think of that big yellow bus.
It’s not always easy. Sometimes when I’m bogged down on a new project I get obsessed with all the details. I can’t see beyond the long list of tasks I must complete and the problems I need to fix. That’s when I have to take a step back and visualize that big yellow bus rolling up. That’s why it’s worth doing all this work: Sasha and Lyra jumping off that bus, wreathed in smiles, knowing I will be there, because I am always there for them.
