As an entrepreneur one of your primary responsibilities is to plan your business. Unfortunately, if you’re like many business owners there just isn’t enough time in the day to plan. You’re too busy making money and managing the systems that keep your business running.
- Schedule it. You schedule everything else, right? Why not schedule planning too. I know, planning is part organization and part inspiration and you just can’t schedule inspiration right? Well, not entirely. You can create an inspiring atmosphere. You can also learn to keep a notebook handy. When you have an idea, jot it down. Then, during your regularly scheduled planning time you can take a look at your amazing list of ideas and get to work.
- Track it. I just mentioned keeping a notebook handy for those inspiring ideas. This is really effective and important. When do most of your great ideas come to you? If you’re like me then they come to you when you’re driving, exercising, doing the dishes and so on. They come to you at really inconvenient times. There’s actually science behind why it happens. Instead of losing a potentially profitable idea, because you never remember them later, keep a notebook handy. You can also use a digital recorder on your mobile device. (I often send myself emails). Regardless of the system you use, make sure to write down your ideas. Don’t try to remember them. Capture the moment and then work on developing the idea later during your planning time.
- Eliminate Distractions. Many people just don’t’ take their planning time seriously. They save it for when they’re sitting in front of the television or they schedule it during their non-productive time of the day. This is backwards! You want to schedule your planning time for your most creative, productive and distraction free time of the day. It is perhaps the single most important time of your week. Don’t catch up on Weeds episodes when you’re trying to plan how you’re going to grow your business!
