As a mom, I watched in suspense, as many of your did, for two hours while the flight of a rogue homemade air balloon flew miles from home, with the possibility of a young child in danger.
As a former journalist, I watched in awe as this became an international story. (It still amazes me how this makes big news, while other stories are never reported.)
As a publicity expert, I began wondering how incredibly ‘happy ending’ this story is. Maybe it’s the former reporter inside of me, but I smell some BS.
A lot of questions are left unanswered. Like why wouldn’t the parents call 911? (They called local media with helicopters to track the balloon, according to one TV reporter.)
And then there’s this:
Publicity stunts are a very tricky business. They often backfire.
And I have a feeling this one will too.
Personally, I hate stunts and advise my clients against this kind of thing. After all, the media don’t like to be played and will bite back when they are.
I guess I will still be watching Balloon Boy and his family a bit longer to see how this all plays out. How about you?
