There is a simple formula for getting a sponsorship. Average the sum of your needs and the sponsor’s needs and you have a winning combination.
Before you can get sponsored, you need to know the things you need, what the sponsor is looking to get out of the deal and figure out how they match.
Calculate Your Needs
Figuring out what you need is probably the most difficult task when asking for sponsorships. Most people either underestimate the cost of the event or don’t realize everything that will need to be included in the proposal.
If you underestimate or don’t factor everything in, you will either run out of funding before the completion or you will not have everything you need to pull the event off. Sponsors would rather see thoroughness than cheap. Make sure you account for every dollar you plan on spending and factor it all into your needs.
Determine Sponsor Needs
Is the sponsor looking to benefit from the list you already have built, or the one you are working on building? Would the sponsor like representation at the event but unwilling to pay their staff’s full expenses to go? It is important to figure out what the sponsor is looking to do with their marketing dollars and how they are planning to expand their market share.
Figure Out How They Match
You need to attend the biggest tech conference in March and you have requested sponsorship from a regional newspaper. The newspaper is looking to increase the subscriber base in the tech section. What better way to get what you need than by helping the paper with timely articles to be published while the conference is going on? You just figured out how to almost guarantee a sponsorship by pairing up your desires with the sponsor’s needs.
Having multiple sponsors is a better way to guarantee sponsorships as no single company has to pay for the whole event. Figuring out what you need, and overestimating if possible, gives you different categories to offer special deals for those sponsors who pay more. Determining what the sponsor needs and meeting those needs is only good business, and good business gets sponsorships.
